Sometimes it's about a rare cigar.
Sometimes it's about an impossible flavor.
Today's client handed me a case that's puzzled detectives for years.
He leaned across my desk and asked,
"Detective… what's the best cigar for someone who's never smoked a cigar before?"
I leaned back.
Lit my cigar.
Watched the smoke curl toward the ceiling.
Because that's a dangerous question.
Walk into any humidor and you'll find hundreds…sometimes thousands…of beautiful dames waiting to be discovered.
The mistake rookies make is believing they're all the same.
They're not.
Some will punch you square in the face before you've finished the first inch.
Some promise excitement but leave you wondering what all the fuss was about.
Others can ruin your very first experience so badly that you'll swear cigars just aren't for you.
That's why I took the case.
Because you're not looking for a cigar.
You're looking for an experience.
First Clue: Stop Looking at the Dress
The first mistake every rookie makes?
They judge the dame by the outfit.
That fancy cigar band?
That's just the dress.
Sure, some are wearing gold.
Some are dressed like royalty.
Others are as plain as yesterday's newspaper.
Don't let the wardrobe fool you.
That band only tells you a few things:
- Her name
- Her family
- Sometimes her measurements
- And occasionally where she came from
The real evidence is underneath.
Pull out your electronic notebook—what most folks call a cell phone—and look her up.
Now we're investigating.
You're looking for four pieces of evidence:
- Wrapper
- Binder
- Filler
- Country of origin
Those four clues will tell you far more than the fanciest band ever could.
Second Clue: Meet the Ladies
Every dame has a personality.
One of the first clues is how she's dressed.
Inside the humidor, I usually group them into three ladies.
The Blonde.
She's wearing a Connecticut wrapper.
The Brunette.
She's dressed in a Natural wrapper.
The Dark Beauty.
She's wrapped in a rich Maduro.
Now here's where rookies get themselves into trouble.
Most people assume the Blonde is always gentle.
Sometimes she is.
Sometimes she'll hit harder than the bouncer at Studio 54.
Because the wrapper is only her dress.
Her true personality comes from what's underneath—the binder and the filler.
That's where the real investigation begins.
Third Clue: Where She Comes From Matters
The country a cigar comes from isn't just trivia.
It's evidence.
Every region develops its own personality.
Nicaragua
Nicaraguan tobacco is famous for producing bold flavors like:
- Cocoa
- Espresso
- Earth
- Black pepper
- Leather
Wonderful cigars…
Just probably not the best place for your very first date.
Honduras
Honduran tobacco often brings:
- Cedar
- Nuts
- Earth
- Mineral notes
- Pepper
Again…
Excellent. But probably a little too much woman for someone smoking their very first cigar.
Dominican Republic
Now we're talking.
If I had to pick one country that consistently produces silky, elegant, creamy cigars, it would be the Dominican Republic.
Expect flavors like:
- Sweet cream
- Toasted almonds
- Butter
- Cedar
- Vanilla
- Gentle baking spices
Notice I didn't say pepper.
There's a difference.
For a first cigar, Dominican tobacco is often where I steer beginners.
Fourth Clue: The Dress Still Matters
Here's where things get interesting.
Many of the world's creamiest cigars don't get their creaminess from the filler alone.
An Ecuador Connecticut wrapper often contributes:
- Heavy cream
- Butter
- Toast
- Almonds
But there's a catch.
If blended too lightly, that same wrapper can produce grassy flavors.
That's why two Connecticut cigars can taste like they came from different planets.
The wrapper tells you how she's dressed.
The filler tells you who she really is.
One More Thing…
Size matters.
There. I said it.
Don't grab the little cigar because you think it'll be easier.
This isn't supposed to be a hit-it-and-quit-it relationship.
Give her time.
Commit to smoking at least halfway before making your decision.
Here's why.
A smaller cigar lets the wrapper do most of the talking.
A giant cigar lets the filler take over.
For your very first experience, I recommend meeting somewhere in the middle.
A Robusto.
Balanced.
Comfortable.
Enough time to really get to know each other.
Don't let the ring gauge intimidate you.
You'll be just fine.

So if you're brand new to cigars…
Don't just buy a cigar.
Choose an experience.
Slow down.
Watch the smoke.
Taste the cream.
Smell the cedar.
Enjoy the aroma before you ever light her.
Pay attention to the way she burns.
Because you're not simply smoking a cigar.
You're collecting evidence.
And somewhere between the first light and the last inch…
You just might discover why so many of us never stopped chasing the next great dame.
